Jack's Tunnel Night
Washburn High School, Friday, September 26, 2008
Jack (#34) and other kids from his Pearl Park "Jr. Cub" football league form a human tunnel (i.e. two single-file lines) for the Washburn Millers (ooh, intimidating) home team to run through. I always feel the need to explain, almost by way of apology, that Jack is not your typical football kid. At one of his first practices, he was humming showtunes ("Mr. Mistoffelees" from "Cats" - the influence of his sister Maggie) and afterwards asked, "Why do the coaches yell so much?" He's not a big fan of physical contact and generally "blocks" by sidestepping any opponent who might be within a two-foot radius. Nevertheless - or perhaps for exactly those reasons - I couldn't be more proud of him; hence, my first-ever blog post for the general public.

Wow. I couldn't be more proud of Jack or, really, of you, Fred. Ever since I first met you, you've been nursing those high school football dreams that were so cruelly crushed during that fateful third-quarter passing rush against Armstrong. (Crushed by the clumsy mascot, of course, but who's quibbling? Not me.)
Anyway, to see you able to mold Jack into the image of what you once were -- a fearsome, thundrous stampede of a linebacker (or was it trombone?) -- warms my heart. Show Jack no mercy in pursuit of his dreams, Fred.
Now give me 20!
